Dr. Hodin will share activities and content related to the Our Acidifying Ocean program, and give a brief overview of related environmental curricular tools for both inside and outside the classroom. Our Acidifying Ocean was developed in 2008 to provide meaningful, accurate and interactive educational content for high school and college students regarding ocean acidification. This single module on the website VirtualUrchin was the seed for a series of web- and field-based educational projects connecting ocean acidification to related environmental concerns. In 2021, with NOAA OAP education mini-grant funding, the first major update to Our Acidifying Ocean was released, updating the data, providing enriched content, and including an additional section of the activity related to student action.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Jason Hodin earned his PhD in Zoology at UW Seattle, studying insect metamorphosis. After graduate school, he shifted directions into studying the amazing metamorphic life cycles of ocean creatures, especially sea urchins and sea stars. This work brought Dr. Hodin to Stanford's Hopkins Marine Station to work with Professor Dave Epel on an NSF grant to produce digital content for students related to sea urchin embryology. He joined the team with Dr. Epel and a decorated local High School teacher, Pam Miller. They produced the core content for the site VirtualUrchin (, incorporating microscopy, basic urchin biology, and ocean acidification. After Professor Epel's retirement, Dr. Hodin took responsibility for the site when he started as a Senior Research Scientist at UW's Friday Harbor Labs. He maintains a 50:50 split in his efforts between VirtualUrchin (and related educational projects) and his research, which has recently included developing the only captive rearing program for the endangered sunflower sea star.
