December 3, 2021. 1:00 PM. Webinar: Training and Support for Climate-Vulnerable Workers in the Western U.S. Kevin Riley, UCLA. Sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Register here.
Changing climate patterns have led to increased temperatures and more severe weather events in many parts of the world, with workers often among the populations at high risk for exposures to these environmental hazards. This presentation will examine the impacts of environmental heat, wildfire smoke, and other climate-related hazards on workers in California and other Western U.S. states. The presentation will highlight the efforts of the Western Region Universities Consortium (WRUC), an NIEHS Worker Training Program grantee, to address the needs of these workers through education and training, strategic partnerships, and capacity building initiatives. WRUC's efforts have focused largely on workers at elevated risk by virtue of sociodemographic characteristics, work settings, and/or employment arrangements. The presentation will consider lessons learned from this work to date, including the importance of building climate resilience among vulnerable workers and communities.
