More than fifty percent of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Urban areas are rapidly expanding and expected to house two-thirds of the world population by 2050. How society develops and manages urban areas and cities will be central to future carbon mitigation to achieve below 1.5 oC global warming targets and United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Apart from challenges related to infrastructure, housing, energy, water supply and sewerage, transportation and health in the face of warming climate, cities also provide tremendous opportunities where new innovative technological and transformational solutions for carbon management can be applied and tested for societal wellbeing. This keynote session will focus on North American Cities and showcase their challenges and achievements to reduce carbon emissions and develop low carbon, green and sustainable 21st century cities.
