In the ensuing years after the entry into force of the Paris Agreement, it has become increasingly obvious that achievement of its temperature objectives will require both aggressive emission reductions initiatives and large-scale deployment of carbon dioxide removal/negative emissions technologies, sometimes also referred to as a major sub-category of climate geoengineering. Indeed, 87% of the IPCC’s scenarios for holding temperatures to below 2° contemplate a substantial role for carbon dioxide removal. These options include afforestation/reforestation, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, enhanced mineral weathering, biochar, and ocean-based approaches, such as ocean iron fertilization.
