Understanding the complex seascape of regulations that apply across ocean space in the United States is a critical part of effective resource management and marine planning. A recent paper published in Marine Policy explores the value of regulations data for assessing the level
of protection within managed areas in U.S. marine waters and suggests that cumulative restrictions from overlapping regulatory authorities often provide stronger levels of protection within protected areas than protected area authorities alone.
