The economic impact of climatic change on critical infrastructure continues to grow each year due to insufficient consideration of resilience during planning and construction. Asset owners continue to underinvest in adaptations that could mitigate the impacts of climate change due to unpredictability of events in both timing and extent and pressing challenges with basic infrastructure needs. In many cases, building for resilience could result in higher initial costs, making it a frequent target for cuts in infrastructure budgets. The presentation provides an overview of a number of initiatives spearheaded by federal and state transportation agencies in the U.S. to build resilience. Furthermore, the use of advanced techniques in condition assessment, disaster data management and decision tools are discussed based on a number of recent case studies, and emerging areas prime for collaboration between academic and industry are highlighted.
