Strong civic engagement can yield strong communities. Leveraging stewardship capacity can be a powerful way for governments, non-profits, and other organizations to achieve outcomes that would otherwise be impossible with finite resources, and to create communities that are stronger, healthier, greener, and more resilient.

Over the past 12 years, scientists at the USDA Forest Service's New York City Urban Field Station have created and implemented a methodology, known as STEW-MAP, to help understand these stewardship groups and their capacity. This Climate Smart Communities (CSC) webinar will provide an overview on how stewardship strengthens communities' ability to deal with various stressors, share selected case studies of stewardship groups' work in post-disturbance contexts, and will share approaches for identifying and connecting to existing stewardship networks.
