Coral reefs provide services valued at billions of dollars per year by supporting fisheries habitat, protecting coastlines, and attracting tourism. The continued survival and functioning of coral reefs is threatened by frequent mass bleaching events, acidifying ocean waters, and increasing disease outbreaks, compounded by persistent local stress. Motivated by rapidly deteriorating environmental conditions, innovative approaches for assisting and accelerating coral reef resilience to the changing environment have been emerging. The potential for developing resilient coral has been explored in interventions that target the genetics, physiology, ecology, and physical environment of coral reefs. A Research Review of Interventions to Increase the Persistence and Resilience of Coral Reefs evaluates the current state of research and feasibility for implementing these novel interventions.

This is the first report of the Committee on Interventions to Increase the Resilience of Coral Reefs. The second report, available in 2019, will include a risk assessment framework and decision pathway to guide progress of these interventions from the research phase to implementation when appropriate.
