Thermodynamic preconditioning and convective evolution leading up to tropical cyclone formation are examined using high-resolution model simulations and the analyses of satellite and field data. In particular, I will address the following questions
Q1: What are the key features of convection leading up to tropical cyclogenesis?
Q2: What thermodynamic conditions promote such convective features?
Q3: What are the relative contributions of different types of precipitation to tropical cyclone formation? A two-stage conceptual model for tropical cyclone formation is proposed based on the analyses.
