Friday, September 9, 2016. 10:30 AM. Limiting Global Warming: Sizing up the Ambition and Challenge. Steven Rose, Electric Power Research Institute. Sponsored by Rutgers Energy Institute. More information here.
The Paris Climate Agreement pointed the nations of the world towards a more aggressive climate change objective of limiting global average warming to well below two degrees Celsius, and offered emissions reduction pledges from most of the world’s countries as a first step. This seminar begins by illustrating that far more aggressive policies are required than currently pledged. The seminar then explores potential post-2030 participation and ambition—mid-century and beyond—to characterize potential climate management progress and the nature of the challenge, for emissions, energy systems, economies, and society. Finally, given the scope of the challenge, it is critically important to look beyond sectors, borders and the near-term to identify policy designs that could reduce mitigation costs and potentially enhance participation. The seminar therefore concludes by considering opportunities for international partnerships.
