Abstract: Climate change is affecting New Jersey and the northeast US in multiple ways: from one of the fastest recently observed statewide average temperature increases to impacts on agriculture and fisheries, to longer wildfire seasons, to the challenges to coastal and urban infrastructure wrought by severe storms like Sandy (2012) and Ida (2021). In order to address these challenges effectively, there is a strong need for participatory, collaborative, user demand- driven climate services between Rutgers faculty and extension agents and community and sector representatives across the state. This seminar will discuss the potential roles of seasonal forecasting, extreme event modeling, sector impact modeling, observation networks and financial adaptations toward these broad climate services objectives. The seminar will be given by SEBS Climate Services assistant professor candidate, Asher Siebert who holds a PhD in Geography from Rutgers, an MA in Climate and Society from Columbia and a BA in Geosciences from Princeton. He has also held postdoctoral positions at Princeton and Columbia and was most recently employed by the International Research Institute for Climate and Society at Columbia University — where his work involved seasonal climate forecasting in Africa for food security and humanitarian response applications.
