Artigas - 2017. Baseline and distribution of organic pollutants and heavy metals in tidal creek sediments after Hurricane Sandy in the Meadowlands of New Jersey.
Professor Jennifer Francis has studied the changing Arctic her entire career. During her graduate work in the early 1990s, data on the Arctic atmosphere were woefully scarce, so she adapted measurements from a weather satellite to fill the gap. Armed with this new information, she studied how and why the Arctic sea ice cover waxed and waned year to year. As sea ice loss became more rapid, she wondered how it would affect weather patterns beyond the Arctic. A study she published in 2012 suggested that rapid Arctic warming would make extreme weather more likely in mid-latitudes where billions of people live. That, and her continued research about the connections between climate change and extreme weather, are widely cited in the media. Learn more about Dr. Francis here.
